Observing patient involvement in shared decision making:
a measurement tool
Achieving patient involvement is difficult in clinical practice. Many studies show that patients are infrequently involved in decisions. Although there is agreement that decision making should be 'shared' with patients, the exact nature of that process remains unclear.
OPTION is a tool that enables progress in this area, measuring the extent to which clinicians involve patients in decision-making. The tool was developed by Professor Glyn Elwyn (Dartmouth College, US), Professor Adrian Edwards, Professor Kerry Hood, Dr Mike Robling (Cardiff University, UK), Dr Michel Wensing and Professor Richard Grol (Radboud University Medical Centre, Netherlands).
There are 2 versions of the OPTION measure, Observer OPTION 12 and Observer OPTION 5. We recommend you use the newer version, Observer OPTION 5. If you would like to use Observer OPTION 12, please find it here.
